Friday Five - 5 Staple Christmas Songs

There are so many things about Christmas that evoke strong emotional responses. From the smell of grandma’s pies and hanging out with your cousins that you only see once a year, to the memory of the nerve wracking anticipation of finding out what was in those boxes under the tree; December 25th holds a special place in many people’s hearts. And we can’t forget about the one aspect that puts Christmas above all other holidays, the music! Other than birthdays, what other holiday got it’s own music on deck? Christmas music is as much of a staple of the holiday season as the Christmas tree and candy canes.

So in no particular order I present to you my Top 5 Christmas songs:

  1. Donny Hathaway - This Christmas
One of the greatest singing voices of all time, Donny Hathaway gives us a subtly seductive upbeat Christmas jam that immediately puts you in the mood. And you can’t deny those horns!

  2. Boyz II Men - Let It Snow
The official Cuffin’ Season National Anthem. If you can’t close the deal with this Christmas jam playing in the background, I’m not sure if you can be helped.

  3. The Vince Guaraldi Trio - Greensleeves
Put on your velvet blazer and your ascot to listen to this one. You may recognize it as the song “What Child Is This”, but that’s cool. I mean, a song about a dude simpin and getting his heart broken probably needs a slight makeover to become a Christmas song.

  4. Marvin Gaye - I Want To Come Home For Christmas
Whew… pour up a little brown liquor and turn the lights down low. If you’re away from your family and loved ones this December and you want to really roll around in your feelings, press play.

  5. OutKast - Player’s Ball
What?! You don’t hear those sleigh bells? Andre rapping, “you thought I’d break my neck to help y’all deck the halls?” Not only is this OutKast’s debut single, but it also FIRST appeared on “A LaFace Family Christmas”.
